How to Replace the Rotor in a Toyota Camry

How to Replace the Rotor in a Toyota Camry

Brake rotors, also known as brake discs, don't need to be replaced very often over the lifetime of your Toyota Camry. When the wear down or get warped, they can cause your Camry to shudder and pulse when you hit the brakes. If this sounds like your Toyota, then it's time to buy new rotors. You can save money on the labor by doing the job yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Buy new rotors for your Toyota Camry at your local auto parts store or order them online. Change all of the rotors at the same time for safe and even braking performance.

    • 2

Raise your Camry on jacks and jack stands to support it properly. Block the wheels to keep it from rolling while you work. Remove the tire and wheel assembly and set aside. Next, unfasten the caliper mounting bolts.

    • 3

Slide the caliper assembly and attached brake line off of the rotor. Hang the assembly safely out of the way with mechanic's wire. Be very careful not to disconnect the brake line at any point.

    • 4

Remove the old rotor and then clean the area around the hub with a damp cloth to remove any debris or corrosion.

    • 5

Install the new rotor onto the hub and tighten the holding screws with a torque wrench or an air ratchet with an appropriate adapter.

    • 6

Discard the wire and mount the caliper assembly back into place. Tighten the caliper mounting bolts with a torque wrench. Replace the wheel assembly and tire and then move on and repeat this process for each additional rotor.

    • 7

Lower your Toyota Camry, tighten and torque the lug nuts and then pump the brake until the pedal feels firm again. Test drive your Toyota to make sure that everything is in working order.
