How to Change Gears in a 1994 Toyota Pickup

Some 1994 Toyota pickup trucks have manual transmissions, which means you need to change gears yourself using the gear stick and the clutch rather than simply accelerate and let the transmission change gears for you. Some users enjoy this because it gives them more control over the engine and, if done correctly, can result in better fuel economy. What's more, it forces the driver to focus more on what's going on around him; driving a manual is more active than passive, as the driver needs to constantly adjust the gears.

Moderately Challenging

Instructions

    • 1

Press the clutch pedal (on the far left) and move the gear stick into the center position. Move it from left to right to ensure that it is in neutral. If it does move to either side, it is in neutral, but if it only moves forward and backward, it is still in gear.

    • 2

Turn the ignition while keeping the clutch depressed. You don't necessarily need to have the clutch pedal depressed, because you're in neutral; the clutch disengages the engine from the transmission, but since you're in neutral the engine is already disengaged. However, you'll need to press the clutch to shift into gear anyway so you may as well keep it pressed in.

    • 3

Push the gear shifter all the way to the left and straight forward. You are now in first gear.

    • 4

Ease the clutch out gently until you feel the gear "catch," which will change the engine's sound. Once this happens, start pressing the gas pedal in at the same rate. This will start the engine's gear moving as it slides into the transmission's gear. If you do this correctly, the truck will start moving forward. If you do this incorrectly, it will stall.

    • 5

Accelerate until the RPM reach 2,500 or so. This should be very soon, as first gear is really only designed for taking off.

    • 6

Release the gas pedal and press the clutch all the way in.

    • 7

Slide the gear stick straight towards you, through neutral, and into second gear. Release the clutch and press the gas pedal as needed (but it is not required).

    • 8

Shift down when you need more acceleration or to climb a hill and shift up as you gain speed. Continue this process through all the gears.
