How to Install a Toyota Timing Belt

How to Install a Toyota Timing Belt

Toyota recommends replacing the timing belt at 60,000-mile intervals based on the vehicle’s service record. The belt generally shows little wear, however the amount the belt stretches over 60,000 miles is the main factor. The belt tensioner travel is limited, and once the belt stretching exceeds the tensioner travel, the belt will come off. The Toyota engine however has been determined to be a freewheeling engine. This means that in the event the belt fails, little or no damage usually occurs.

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • 1/2-inch drive ratchets
  • Set of 1/2-inch drive sockets
  • 1/4-inch drive ratchet
  • Set of 1/4-inch drive sockets
  • Set of wrenches
  • Special wheel puller number 09213-31021
    • 1

Raise the car and support it on jack stands. Remove the tire and wheel assembly on the passenger side with the 1/2-inch drive socket. Remove the inner splash shield using a socket. Remove the windshield washer reservoir using a socket. Remove the cruise control actuator using a socket.

    • 2

Loosen the tensioner and remove the accessory drive belts with a wrench. Place the floor jack under the engine and remove the passenger side, upper motor mount using the 1/2-inch drive socket.

    • 3

Remove the air conditioning compressor and bracket using the appropriate size socket, but leave the lines connected. Remove the water pump pulley using a wrench. Remove the valve cover using a 10mm socket. Remove the upper and lower timing belt covers using a 10mm socket.

    • 4

Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise until the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley is aligned with the "0" timing mark on the timing plate on the cover behind the crankshaft. Look at the camshaft sprocket--a small hole should be vertical at the 12 o’clock position and you should see a dot on the cylinder head, through the hole. If the hole is not at the vertical position, rotate the crankshaft one more time and it will line up.

    • 5

Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and the crankshaft pulley using the special wheel puller. Remove the cover behind the crankshaft pulley followed by the belt guide plate.

    • 6

Loosen the tensioner bolt. Push it away from the belt and loosely tighten the bolt to hold the tensioner in place. Remove the timing belt.

    • 7

Check the timing marks to make sure they have not moved. Install the timing belt starting on the right side away from the tensioner. Keep all the tension on the right side away from the tensioner. Loosen the bolt in the tensioner and allow it to apply tension to the timing belt.

    • 8

Turn the engine clockwise two turns and re-align the timing marks. Tighten the tensioner bolts securely. Replace the remaining parts in reverse order of removal.
