How to Install a Fuel Tank in a Toyota Corolla

The Toyota Corolla has long been a reliable car that has evolved from a fast sports car to a classy sedan. The Corolla's structure is reliable and user-friendly, even when it comes to installing a new fuel tank. Following the correct procedures will ensure proper fuel tank installation in your 1993 or newer model Toyota.

     Remove the fuel filler cap from the existing fuel tank and insert a siphoning hose to empty the remaining fuel into a fuel container. Raise your Corolla up on jackstands and push back the rear seat cushion to gain trunk access.

     Take off all fuel lines and hoses on and around the fuel tank. Unwrap the tank straps and loosen the strap bolt with a torque wrench. Lower the tank to the ground with a floor jack, placing a wooden board under the tank for support.

     Place the new fuel tank on the floor jack and raise it up in place under your Corolla's trunk. Tighten the tank straps around the fuel tank and adjust the bolt to a 29-lb. setting with the torque wrench. Make sure to put in the fuel tank cushion before installation to absorb any vibration from your work.

     Attach the breather hose, return hose and the supply hose to your Toyota's tank pipe. Adjust the supply hose to a setting of 21 lbs. with your wrench. Connect the filler neck and overflow pipe to the right rear side of your car. Ensure that the clamps on both pipes are secure and properly situated on the car.

     Lower your car to the ground once the fuel tank is situated underneath the car. Install the pump and sending-unit electrical connectors to the tank's rear harness. Replace the rear seat cushion once you're done connecting all electrical and wiring parts.

     Pour the fuel from the gas container back into the fuel tank. Replace the fuel filler cap, close the empty gas container and clean up your work area.

     Start your car and check for any signs of leakage around your tank or fuel lines. If there's no leakage, run your engine for a few minutes before taking a short test drive.

Tips & Warnings

• Use a spray engine cleaner to clean off the fuel tank before removing it instead of soaking it in cleaning solvent. Soaking it corrodes the quality of the fuel tank upon installation.

• Keep a fire extinguisher handy in case any part of the car catches fire.
